One Year of Inferno Project

Today marks the one year anniversary of my blog and I would like to thank everyone who comes here to read what I write — especially those who leave feedbacks and/or comments.  THANK YOU!

With the anniversary comes a contest with a prize to show my appreciation, full details at the end of the post.  Edit: I forgot to mention “HAPPY NEW YEARS!!”.

The Blog

I had no clear plan on what to blog about when I started blogging, but as figure reviews racked up, I found that my real interest lies in figure talk.  Sure, I like to watch anime and all that, but my true love lies in blogging about this hobby more than anything.

The name “Inferno Project” just came out of my head when blogger asked for a blog name.  Yes, I made a brief stint on blogger, but it was such a drag to blog there, so I moved to wordpress.  I’m still here so I’m satisfied with what they have.  It would be nice if they have a mass upload option for photos because it’s a pain to upload 40 pictures.  Back to the name, I actually had something else in mind for the name, but that never really transpired into anything…but I might get back to that next year…in 2011 that is.

My Collection

My collection grew by 85 figures over the past year (excluding trading figures) and new glass shelves were bought from Ikea to construct my Wall-o-Figures.  I never thought this day would come (well, not literally) but the time to expand the wall-o-figures have come.  I have completely ran out of shelf space to display anymore figures on the wall.  It’s really helpful to look at the wall to see which character I have the most figures of.  She’s one of my favourite character.

85 figures, I didn’t even know I bought that many last year.  Twenty is my goal for next year to keep my wallet sane.

Figure Reviews

Figure reviews is probably what people come to my blog for nowadays.  It all began with my review on Revoltech’s Saber Alter.  My initial plan was to review my older figures before moving onto the new ones, but that plan failed miserably when I started buying 10 figures a month.  The backlog spiraled out of control when I finally decided to review the new stuff before going for the old ones.  Right now, I review figures straight out of the box because I get more motivation for the photoshoot: I can’t display it if I don’t review it.

I’ve reviewed 33 figures over the past year and I’ve made numerous changes to how things are done.  Currently, I’m working on a standardized format so I can roll out the reviews faster, and more importantly, it’ll be easier for you to read.  I don’t think I can make significant improvements to the pictures until I get a new camera, and subsequently new photoshoot station.  These will come in 2010 as well as something bigger…that I’ll talk about when everything is ready to go.

I’m using a Sony T-100 at the moment, in case you’re new and you don’t know that already.  It’s quite frustrating to use at times, but I’ve learned a lot from it.

This is my favourite shot from my latest review on Alter’s Fate T. Harlaown -True Sonic Form-.  I’ll talk more about my figure reviews another post.

The Contest

Before we talk about the anniversary contest, here’s the answer to the last contest question for figma Miku Live Stage Version.  There were only four entries and none of them got it.  The answer is Miku Morizaki A Type from Gigapulse.  One of the hint I gave was “It was from HLJ’s just-in-time sale”, a sale that only lasted for three days, so you wouldn’t know what I was talking about if you don’t check them that often.  Enrius was the closests with his answer being GSC’s Akiha Shishidou, she was one of the figures from the sale.  So why did I get this figure?  I’m a curious person, and as such, I was curious at how these figures from GigaPulse looks like.  I don’t think I’ll review this one.

The prize for the anniversary contest is your choice of either a 4,000 yen HLJ coupon code OR a figma of your choice from HLJ or AmiAmi (must be in stock).

Here’s the question:

Which character do I have the most figures of?

  • Tie breaker: How many do I have of said figure?

  • Look at the wall.
  • More than meets the eyes.
  • Any figure.

Here are the rules:

  • All answers have to be in the comments in this post.  (i.e. you cannot leave your answer in another post on my blog…makes sense, right?)
  • You have to provide the character’s FULL NAME and tie breaker question along with the prize you want.
  • The name must be provided in the following format “Answer: XXXXXX”, replace the Xs with character name.  Your comments will go into moderation automatically, so don’t submit your answer again.  This way your answer won’t appear for the world to see.
  • Only ONE answer per contestant.
  • The prize is not transferrable to another person.
  • Anyone can participate, but should there be a tie, the tie breaker decides the winner.  The person who’s been a long-term follower wins should there be a tie after the tie breaker.
  • People who have not left a comment here before this post does not count as a long-term follower.  Sorry, but the only way I can verify you as a follower is by comments on my blog.
  • Entry for the anniversary contest closes on January 7th, 2009 @ 11:59:59 pm EST.
  • Failure to adhere to the above rules will disqualify you as a contestant.

Congratulation for this first year (Shadonia will celebrate her first year too on 3rd January). You have got a beautiful collection, and I really like you site. Your review are good and your picture great. I wish you a long continuation and a happy new year !

  2. 3 Guy 12/31/2009 at 13:51

You should screen comments, so people won’t see others’ replies?

I might reply later, because that matters less to me.
Less than what? Less than congratulating you :)

Also, I once sat down and thought how much money I’d spent every year on Magic: the Gathering or RPG books, and then I told to myself I didn’t realize I spent that much money, or even possessed that much money, during that year.

I then started writing all RPGs I purchased, mostly to just know, but it helped put things into perspective, and then there was a plummet in the figures. It may have been because I’ve simply ran out of space…

    • 4 Tommy 12/31/2009 at 14:29

      Thanks Guy,

I’ve made a change to the rules to address your concern. ;)

It’s really shocking to see how much money we pour into our hobbies initially. But it’s all good as long as you like it. Happy New Years!

      • 5 Guy 01/01/2010 at 22:50

Well, I’ve spent about all my money on M:tG and RPGs from say, 97 to 2005…

And by all, I mean, when I looked back, I didn’t even realize I had that much money in my hands, heh, and if I had it all in my hands at any one time, who knows what I’d have spent it on… except when I spent some $350 on Amazon buying RPG books.

  3. 6 Miette-chan 12/31/2009 at 16:51

A year and 85 figures later? That’s quite a bit I don’t think I hit the 40 figure mark and even then over half of mine are figmas.

It’s quite interesting that you had the same experience with Blogger and moving to WordPress.

I do hope that you will catch up with the other 50 or so figures you didn’t review this year. I look forward to a new year of your articles.

    • 7 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 22:46

If I counted correctly, I got 50 scaled figures, and the rest are Myth Cloths, figmas, and Revoltechs. There are a couple figures that I wish I didn’t buy, but it’s all good. ;D

Yeah, blogger is for more advanced users.

      I hope I can review my backlog of figures as well. ^^;;

  4. 8 Saku 12/31/2009 at 19:28

Happy Anniversary. 85 figures in a year are a lot lol. I barely hit 10 scaled figures ^^;;. Looking forward to more articles in 2010

  5. 10 Ninjovee 12/31/2009 at 20:41

Wow! The year end actually marks your blog’s first anniversary! Congratulations! ^^ I salute you sir for being able to dish out a lot of reviews… and very nice ones at that!

    I am also in awe by the number of figure purchases you had… you’re rich (in my standards) OTL;;

More power to you and Inferno Project! ^_^

*Will post her answer for the giveaway in another post*

    • 11 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 22:50

      Thanks Ninjovee!

Well, I actually made the move over on the 29th, but I was only fiddling around with wordpress and didn’t make a “real” post until the 31st. And it’s easier to remember this way. XD

I would’ve gotten more if I was actually rich. But unfortunately, I’m not, so I had to hold back on some figures that I wanted because my paycheck won’t warrant such spending. But I do admit I spent a lot last year. “orz

  6. 12 Ninjovee 12/31/2009 at 20:57

Which character do I have the most figures of?
    Answer: Miki Hoshii

Tie breaker: How many do I have of said figure?
Answer: 10 (if it includes extras), 8 (if there are none)

    Prize of Choice: HLJ coupon

I hopes I have a chance! *fingers crossed*

  7. 13 Lylibellule 01/01/2010 at 05:17

Happy new year, best wishes for 2010. I’m impressed by the amount of figures you bought in 2009. It’s hard to resist in front of all those beautiful figures.
I follow you for quite some times and i remember your first reviews and it’s great how your improved your photos skill.
Thanks for this contest, it’s generous of you. I’ll try to participate but back then i couldn’t read everything because my english was not that good. I just looked at the photos.

    • 14 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 22:53

Thanks! Best wishes to you too Lyli!

Yes, it’s hard to resist pretty girls…figures.

You were one of the first to come here regularly, and I thank you for that. It’s good to see everything is well with you now. ^^

I still have a lot to learn compared to your photos, but I’m working on that. I love your diorama sets. :)

  8. 15 enrius 01/01/2010 at 09:26

Congratulation on your blog’s first anniversary! I already forgot how I ran across TIP… Was it because of Alice? But it was definitely a pleasure to read your blog as well as to see some transition going on now and then… ^^

    Keep up the good work!

  9. 18 enrius 01/01/2010 at 09:48

    Answer: Nagato Yuki
    Tie breaker: 7
    Prize: HLJ 4,000 yen Coupon

  10. 19 Wolfheinrich 01/01/2010 at 17:02

Congrats to your first year! And Happy New Year to you~

  11. 21 Blowfish 01/01/2010 at 19:58

    Frohes Neues Jahr!

    So its already a year?
I think youve beat me in terms of figures and reviews in one year even though im into it for about 1 1/2 years now XD

Ill look into guessing the character later on :P

    • 22 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 22:59

      Thanks Blowfish.

I take it that was a “congratulations” in German and not a “eff you dude”. ^^

Yup, a year goes by real fast nowadays. I wish I did more in 2009, both for my blog and for myself.

I’ll look forward to your answer. XD

    • 23 Tommy 01/10/2010 at 23:02

It looks like a “Happy New Year” now.

  12. 24 Blowfish 01/01/2010 at 20:14

    Dang! i totally forgot!
I wanna see a review of that Giga Pulse figure *cough* *cough*

    • 25 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 23:00

I run the risk of turning TIP into a porn site. *wink wink*

I’ll see what I can do, since it can be good for page views. LOL

      • 26 Brian 01/02/2010 at 00:35

Probably a hentai site at that.

Well Happy New Year, I enjoyed reading all the reviews.
85 is a lot, compared to my meager sum of zero figures.
I only have a MG Wing Zero, a strike Freedom HG, O raiser gundam NG, a figma saber, and a robot damashii lancelot albion, the last 2 I had to ask my friends to help me buy.

        > . <

Well I look forward to the next year of figure reviews, even if it is just 20. ^_^

        • 27 Tommy 01/03/2010 at 23:42

Happy New Year to you too. Your figma Saber counts as a figure too. I didn’t buy 85 scaled figures, that would be suicide!

I’ll do more than 20 figure reviews for sure, I still have some 30+ figures on the backlog. “orz

  13. 28 meronpan 01/01/2010 at 21:08

    omedetou gozaimasu~

    grats on a first year!

i also failed on my plan to review my older figures ^^;;; still have quite a backlog of those.

    and i also have a “don’t display until review is complete” rule… though mine is so that i don’t have too much dust by the time i get around to the review ^^;;;

    kotoshimo yoroshiku onegaishimasu~

    • 29 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 23:05

      Thanks meronpan!

LOL, I never expected my figure spending to spiral out of control back then. Looking at other peoples’ blogs did a number on my wallet. I wanted everything that was announced back then. “orz

Yeah, reviewing out of the box reduces the chance of reviewing a damaged figure as well. Swear to god I have no idea how some of the scratches got on the girls.

Happy New Year, and best wishes. =D

  14. 30 thetsundere 01/01/2010 at 22:07

    Congratulations on 1 year anniversary!
I used to have a blogger too, and moved to WordPress for same reasons… never looked back since ^^

Might comment again later with contest entry, but I’m struggling with my answer >.< I get the feeling that not ALL your figures are on the wall?
And I think I'm analysing the clues to much.
Anyhoo, might just take a random stab in the dark in the end! =D

    and btw, Happy New Year!

    • 31 Guy 01/01/2010 at 22:48

I moved back in 07, back when WP didn’t look that much better, when Blogger had all those outages, several in a couple of months, and I just had it.

In the time since, Blogger still looks pretty much like crap, but WP had advanced by leaps and bounds!

Blogger only has the ads part going for it.

    • 32 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 23:14

WordPress is really nice, and it’s good enough for now. Things that I would like to see are mass photo upload and more formatting options. Mass photo upload is a must for me. ^^

May the clues be with you. XD

      Happy New Year!

      • 33 Ninjovee 01/01/2010 at 23:28

You know… their flash uploader supports mass photo uploads… you just need to select more than one photo. I’m not sure if they have a limit though

        • 34 Tommy 01/01/2010 at 23:47

Yeah, but you still have to insert them into your post one at a time unless you choose to insert them as gallery thumbnails.

  15. 35 inferno0748 01/01/2010 at 22:55

    Congrats on 1 year anniversary of your blog. I came here initially is due to your review of Kaiyodo fraulein series. After which I came here to read all your figure reviews and the photos were well taken. Sometimes these reviews also give me the urge to get some of them. ^^;

    Anyway, back to the giveaway.

    Answer: Hoshii Miki
    Tie breaker: 6

  16. 37 gordanham 01/02/2010 at 03:33

Congrats on 1 year of your blog.
    Happy New Year!

    Answer: Miki Hoshii Amount:6

  17. 38 lightningsabre 01/02/2010 at 03:56

Happy New Year and Happy Blog-Day! Seems like 2008 was the bloom of new bloggers :D

I may have ordered quite a lot of figures, but my blog hardly have any figure reviews ^^; For one I’m not that good at reviewing them. I like the look of it and it’s good enough for me. At least that’s how I look at figure reviews XD

As for Blogger… I managed to make do with it and satisfied with its simplicity (in my opinion). I would totally love a mass upload system, but I figured out the quirks in Blogger that I can deal with it ^^

And nice of you to do a contest for your one year ;)

    • 39 Tommy 01/03/2010 at 23:45

Happy New Year to you too.

It seems that way, but I bet we’ll see more popping up this year!

Well, we wouldn’t be ordering something if we don’t like the look of it right? I just hate it when what we see (in promo photos) is not what we get. That’s a problem when we buy online because we can’t see the actual product, so we’ll have to “trust the companies”.

      • 40 lightningsabre 01/07/2010 at 16:36

Yeah, so true… I realize that promo/prototype photos do not justify the actual product. I tend to see the face gets the hit (not literally). I think it was one of the Shunya Yamashita figures and the face did not look like the photo, so I’m not happy with it and thinking of selling it.

  18. 41 lightningsabre 01/02/2010 at 03:59

Answer: Souryuu Asuka Langley. 8 of her figures.

  19. 42 edwin 01/02/2010 at 07:01

    Let me see. Is it:
    Answer: Haruka Amami
I see 5 of them unless it’s a different girl with a similar hairstyle

  20. 44 Q 01/02/2010 at 12:52

Happy Anniversary! A very interesting time too as it’s just before the New Year too!

Haha 85 figures and 33 reviews… Such number of figures is hard for me to imagine I must say, even though you show pictures of your room now and then. Since I only got 1/85 of your number I can’t really say much about it orz. Cutting back on the number and the budget on it can be a good idea or even part of the New Year’s resolution (if you do any). I probably am trying to not buy any or just a few poseable ones at most for 2010.

    • 45 Tommy 01/03/2010 at 23:50

      Thanks, and Happy New Year!

I just happens that I had nothing to do that couple days so I decided to play around on wordpress…and here I am one year later.

Well, only half of my collection is scaled figures. I still have more action figures than scaled ones. But that will change by the next anniversary. I don’t do any New Year’s resolution. I just do it! ^^

Hmm…what if Alter releases a loli Fate-chan from the movie? You’re not going to be tempted by that? You know they’ll do it!

  21. 48 Rapunzel 01/02/2010 at 14:53

Congrats on hitting one year!:D I don’t believe I’ve ever commented before, and since I am now I’d just like to say I really appreciate the fact that you review Idol Master figures, you’re the only blogger I’ve seen do this and it really helps a lot since I love the Megahouse releases but can never decide if I love it enough or not, your reviews always help so much with that decision, so once again, thanks!

I’m pretty sure that the figure you have the most of is Miki Hoshii from Idolm@ster with eight figures :D I was almost completely sure it would be Haruka considering how much you love her, but nope, thanks to Max Factory’s double release of her in both variants you’ve got more of Miki :D

    Happy New Year!!

    • 49 Rapunzel 01/02/2010 at 14:57

Oh I’m sorry!! Also if I were to win I’d love to have the HLJ coupon code for 4,000 yen. Thanks so much :D I hope forgetting this doesn’t automatically disqualify me…

    • 50 Tommy 01/04/2010 at 00:02

I wish there would be more reviews of Idolm@ster figures too. I’m glad my reviews helped though. :D

I don’t really “love” Haruka that much, but I’m okay with her. My favourite from the series is the Futami twins, they’re too cute. My love for Miki, Chihaya, and most recently, Takane Shijou is growing though.

I kinda hoped Max Factory would release figures of the other girls too. But I guess they didn’t sell enough Miki figures to make it worthwhile.

      Happy New Year!

      • 51 Rapunzel 01/07/2010 at 20:08

        You’re welcome :D

I think that all the Idolm@aster girls have their own quirky charm, though visually I find Azusa to be the most visually appealing <3 I wish the games could be played in English so that I could know more about the characters than just their character designs XDXD.

I have to agree, Max Factory did such a lovely job on Miki [especially the vest/boots] that it makes the others kind of fall by comparison, however Megahouse seems to be releasing all the girls so I really can't complain since the fanbase has at least something :D And theirs are quite good from the pictures I've seen [I've yet to buy one due to hesitation and that comparison to Max Factory's]

Oh darn, as I was coming up here to see if you'd replied I saw that the petite nendoroids didn't count in the total, so I suppose I'm wrong on the Miki Hoshii one XDXDXD Which means that my reply about having 7 Nagato Yuki's was probably the right answer, huh. XDXD

        • 52 Tommy 01/10/2010 at 22:19

Like I always say, they have a girl to tickle every fancy…sometimes more than one girl too.

MegaHouse is using Nekohouse’s sculpt/design for their figures, so it’s not a fair comparison since they’re based on different designs. I like MegaHouse’s version of Miki more because of the lovely details they added like the flowing hair and her abs showing through on her outfit. A huge problem I have with Max Factory’s version is they didn’t put a finishing coat on top of the glitters on her outfit. So every I dust them down, a couple pieces comes off. “orz

Nendo’s count, I’ll be posting the answer tomorrow. =)

    • 53 Tommy 01/10/2010 at 23:11

foo-bar-baz have reviews for their figures too, just the first four in the series though. The idols aren’t that popular outside of Japan, unfortunately. You might see a lot more of them if Bandai/Namco decides to release the game on the PS3 or Wii.

  22. 54 Snesso 01/03/2010 at 11:30

Gratz on the first year. I sometime lurk around here, but there are so many figure blogs around that I barely manage to follow them all :(

    Answer: 5 Amami Haruka

  23. 56 Optic 01/05/2010 at 09:14

Congratz on ur 1 year anniversary. Since ur one year anniversary is so near the end of the year, it’s easy to keep track without thinking u might missed it. At times, I have to keep looking back at mind when it comes near. -_-

Happy New Year and looking forward to more figure reviews from ya. Figure reviews is not a priority for me anymore since there are plenty out there to satisfy ur needs.

    As for the contest.
    Answer: Miki Hoshii

    • 57 Tommy 01/10/2010 at 23:14

It’s a good thing that I don’t have to keep track of when my blog hits one year. But it’s not too hard to keep track of that anyways. :)

Happy New Year to you too, and I’ll definitely bring more reviews to you.

  24. 58 anonymous_object 01/05/2010 at 23:52

85 figures in one year? That is quite impressive :D
Well, congratulations on a great first year and I hope to see you around for another one :D

By the way, there is a WordPress plugin called Faster Image Insert that will solve your problem. I was also annoyed by the fact that WordPress only lets you insert one image at time by default and after some research I found this plugin. Hope it helps!

  25. 61 anonymous_object 01/06/2010 at 00:02

    Answer: Yuki Nagato

  26. 62 Candy 01/06/2010 at 22:54

    Answer: HOSHII MIKI
    How many: 6

  27. 63 Candy 01/06/2010 at 23:07

I know I don’t leave comments much but I do like reading your posts.

I hope to see another year of figure reviews. Because of you I’m half tempted to start my own :D

  28. 65 Guy 01/07/2010 at 04:59

You said not to count trading figures, does that include puchi nendoroids?

  29. 69 Tier 01/08/2010 at 00:45

Congrats! It takes a lot of hard work to take pictures and process them and write up reviews and look for ways to attract traffic and to come up with a page layout that makes you happy. Doing all these things over a year takes supreme dedication.

    • 70 Tommy 01/10/2010 at 22:22

      Thanks. I agree that choosing which pictures to post is a lot of hard work. I used to cared more for attracting traffic, but I haven’t done anything to attract more traffic for a while. Might need to get back to that. ^^;;
